The Child Study Team of David E. Owens Middle School is comprised of a school psychologist, a social worker, and a learning disabilities teacher/consultant. The members of the Child Study Team provide valuable consultation to the teaching staff with regard to all students at the middle school. However, the primary responsibility of the Child Study Team is to conduct evaluations of students for potential learning disabilities and assist in the development of individual education plans if needed. Programs of special education may include modifications to traditional instructional and assessment strategies, additional educational support services, speech therapies, occupational therapies, and/or alternative classroom settings.

Mrs. Justine Mills
I have been a member of the David E. Owens Child Study Team for the past seven years. My primary role as a case manager is to ensure that the children on my caseload receive the adequate services and support required to assist them in meeting educational success. Whether it be through collaboration with students, parents, teachers or related service providers, the end goal is meeting the students’ needs academically, socially, emotionally, and mentally. As a social worker in the building, when needed, students are provided with the skills and tools on how to cope with personal and psychological issues that sometimes affect their school performance, behavior, and socialization. It is important for students to know that there is always someone to turn to and talk to no matter how small or big their challenge may be, and my door is always open!

Mr. Ahmet Matthew Kilic
I have been in the education field for nine years. I taught Math at elementary and middle school level in my first five years, and I have been working as a learning consultant for the past four years. My role in our CST team generally includes determining the learning strengths and weaknesses of students, determining specific achievement levels in a variety of content areas, and recommending specific teaching methods and strategies that may benefit a student. I work in collaboration with other members of a child study team to determine eligibility for special services. I also consult with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to provide research-based instructional strategies to assist pupils struggling academically. I am glad to have the opportunity to serve the children of New Milford Community, and help them reach their full potential.
